If you have a cat or more than one cat, then you are going to get some great cat training tips. These tips will be simple and easy to do and will cover various situations that most of the cat owners are familiar with. Plus, these tips may in turn spin off some great ideas from yourself.
Well, the most important lesson to cat training is to remember that to have an effective training, you have to be consistent with your training schedules and methods. Otherwise, you will be giving your cat a hard time trying to understand what exactly you want.
Below are four great cat training tips that you can use to get through your first phase of your cat ownership.
1. Punishments do not really work well with cats. Cats are not like dogs where punishment will cause him to change his behavior. Cats just don’t bother with you punishing him. So don’t bother to waste time trying to punish him in hopes that he will change his behavior. They will just sit back there purring and smiling at you as if nothing has happened, and will continue with the same behavior.
2. Instead try to give more positive encouragement in the form of treats or verbal approvals. This is because in many instances, you will only found out who is the criminal behind the “crime” after it has already been performed. So it is easier to find your cat doing something right and immediately rewarding him with treats on hand. Such examples can be when your cat use the scratching post or the litter box.
3. Always try to keep your cat busy by having lots of activities or toys in your house, especially when you are not around. One little trick is that you can buy a timer for your TV and set it to go off at different times of the day to switch on your TV. The noise from the TV will attract your cat and he will come exploring and staying for awhile to watch the TV. It would be best if the channel is tuned to some animal-friendly channel such as Animal Planet or Discovery Channel.
4. Keep a spray bottle of water handy in your house. You will soon learn the great value of it. Just by spraying a cat with the harmless water will be enough to catch your cat attention and cause it to stop his misbehavior immediately. So whenever your cat misbehaves, squirt him with the spray bottle. Soon, he will realize it and stop that kind of behavior.
These are just some of the many cat training tips that are widely available. As time goes by, you and your cat will eventually start to form a bond whereby you will have a special kind of language of your own with him. So in a way, you will be able to read each other’s body language in the future.
